The investigator also discovers this new depraved enemy that has entered the city. Along the way he also discovers the truth about Markus, but he is powerless against his friend. Both men are thrown into a labyrinth of murderous horrors, deceit, and violence as vengeance wreaks its havoc on the streets of Chicago, threatening the lives of the women they love. Throw into the streets Vincent's lust for control of the city, a maniacal Satanist that feeds on the despair his victims, and one investigator's dedication to justice. How far will a mourning gangster go to avenge his loss? How much will he risk for the ones he loves? How many others, innocent or otherwise, will be drawn into his well of grief?

It is a very rare thing these days to find any book of fiction that is at all original or has any meaning or real value to it. Most people write according to methods they learn and focus on this plot twist or this idea for a good mystery, but most of them could easily be overlooked because there is always another book just like it and it has no real meaning to it. There are very few books that you can recommend that everyone should read because so many are the same and you can easily just pick something else up.The Ninth Hour is different. It is a good thriller and a sophisticated gangster novel with enough mystery elements to satisfy someone who just wants a solid read, but it also takes us on a personal journey where other books fail to. The characters are extremely well developed, even in books this is becoming rare, and it is easy enough to immagine yourself in their situation or facing similar trials. There is an amazing association that isn't even a part of the main plot and is only briefly mentioned that compares 1920 Chicago to the revolutions taking place in Mexico at the time. And here I'll say that the timeline for the book is extremely well developed, as the book begins in 1920 and ends in 1926, though you don't realize so much time passes. The author has all the events and historical information in their correct time period. This is not a slow retelling of history, but you can see that it is very, very well researched.
There is an idea that asks us, "What choices would a superior mind truly make in this situation?" It is clearly developed throughout the book by the author in Markus Calvin, the main villain. Because if a mind is truly great there are certain compromises they would not make, or there are certain actions that would require a compromise of there intellect and will. An interesting idea shows that the villain never justifies what he does. Instead he even explains to the hero of the story that they are wrong. And that is what a truly superior mind would do, because otherwise they compromise their intellect. But he chooses his actions for a reason, and that reason is enough to make anyone reading the book actually have an attraction for the villain, which is exactly what a well developed character should do.
There is a very important plot line that involves great controversy among people today. The author does not make judgment calls of his own though. He simply writes it as a part of the story. As a part of the story it is a very serious and thought provoking element. The reader may have their own preconceived ideas about it, but this story will make them think about it as never before. There is no reason why two people holding opposing views cannot both enjoy this, but it may even make some people change their beliefs or opinions about certain things as they give them new thought. I myself have a newfound respect for life and the people around me, and this is something I developed on my own. The book simply told it the way it was, and it was a very important and amazing idea to use such an element in telling this story. I decided for myself that certain lives are too valuable. No matter the position you hold, you should find this part of the story intriguing, and likely people holding either view will both think of it in ways they did not before.
We all experience hardships in life, and today I see a lot of people going around always negative. People always say this is the end times or this doomsday thing or that and everyone has moments where they feel depressed, but the book also shows how even in the darkest hours there is still hope. Hope is one of the biggest messages in the book, but it is not preached to us. We see it develop and we reach the conclusion on our own. If you want a morally uplifting book with a very positive message, this is it.
This book was a joy to read and thrilling enough to make a good movie. So why choose this over any of a thousand other books? Because it has an original story full of new ideas and was written with meaning and for a purpose, and every adult can relate to and have an interest in it. I think it is one you will want to pick up. For myself I have a new outlook on life, and there actually seems to be a real meaning to life that I never knew was there. To quote the book, "Everything has a meaning,, everyone has a purpose; every man is called to the same end. It remains his decision alone as to what end he is given."

I think it would appeal to everyone (men and women) because it has a combo of suspense, romance, revenge, and an intricate action packed story that is just brilliant!
