On an Indian reservation in the American southwest, a six-year-old girl is missing. The tribal police think she has wandered into the surrounding desert and gotten lost. They know they have very little time to find the girl before the desert claims her life. Black mountaineer James Robinson volunteers to help with the search, but the officer in charge of the search effort forms a low opinion of James and teams him up with a discredited Native American tracker named Novia.
Through flashbacks it becomes apparent that James has more mettle than anyone knows, as his courage, determination, and endurance have been tested to the limits, from the mean streets of South L.A. to the mountain passes beyond Kathmandu.
But as James and Novia go deeper and deeper into the desert following an uncertain trail in search of the missing girl, James starts to question Novia's motives and ability. In fact, he thinks she might just be crazy.

What a truly enjoyable surprise this book is. The main character is absolutely likable from page one. I finished the book in one reading, I was that engrossed. As a few have mentioned in their reviews, its almost two stories in one as we toggle between past and present. In the flashbacks we join James as he attempts to concquer Everest ( and winds up saving like everybody ) while in the present we join along on a desperate search in the desert for a missing girl as time is running out. In both tales James shows himself to be not only an accomplished athlete, but, a man of quality and bravery. Great book.Product details

Summiting edition by William Harvey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
At first I wondered if the book was about the missing child at the reservation or about the summit to the mountain, as you go back and forth in the story. Either way, James is the "hero" of both.
About one man who is the hero in two parallel stories - one in the past and one in the future. The author did a great job of keeping both stories going at the same time while holding the reader's interest and not getting confused between the two stories.
A tale of steady hard work triumphing over adversity. Well written and full of information about things I knew little about. Well written, entertaining, easy to form emotional attachment to the two main characters. It's a cliche, but I actually couldn't put it down.
Interesting story. Actually, two stories in one book. Nicely done. From the highest mountain to the low desert. Great details and characters.
This is a good read. This story takes quite a few social problems head on and makes a lot of sense while doing it, not in a goody two shoes way but reality type.
Loved this book! Unusual style was used by the author, very engaging and enjoyable. I have never mountain climbed, but the author made me believe that the main character has and quite successfully. You begin to understand how almost obsessive he is about it and why. His encounters with racial discrimination is sad to hear, but very believable. This also helps the reader understand where he is coming from and is very admirable how he has overcome it. I would like to read more by this author.
This is a THRILLING and ENTHRALLING BOOK about a thirty year old African American man who has learned to live with his heritage despite the bigotry of some people and has thrived and attained the love and respect of those people who for different reasons come into his life. He reaches and surpasses goals that he has set for himself both in life and in his favorite pass time and passion which is mountain climbing. Big mountains like Mt. Everest. This story brought me to tears both of sadness and joy.A book you can't put down. I TOTALLY RECOMMEND O ALL AGES.
